What Is Other Than Collison Insurance?

Other Than Collison (often referred to as “Comprehensive”) auto insurance covers damage to your car caused by external events outside of your control. Glenwood Insurance Agency is here to help your protect your vehicle, whether it’s on the highway or parked in your driveway.  While many vehicular accidents involve other drivers and vehicles, there are certain types of accidents that don’t involve another car, which is where Other Than Collison insurance comes in.

What Does Other Than Collision Insurance Cover?

Other Than Collison auto insurance covers damage caused by vehicular accidents that don’t involve colliding with another vehicle or object. Some examples of losses that would fall under Other Than Collision coverage are:

  • Theft
  • Collisions with animals
  • Vandalism
  • Fires or explosions
  • Hail
  • Certain falling objects
  • Floods

Is Comprehensive Insurance Required?

Other Than Collision coverage is not required in any state but it is an extremely valuable coverage for your auto insurance policy and covers types of loss that Collision insurance does not.

What Isn’t Covered by Other Than Collision Insurance?

While Other Than Collision covers a wide variety of loss types, it does not cover things like roadside assistance or rental car reimbursement.

How does an Other Than Collision Deductible Work?

If your vehicle is damaged as the result of a covered Other Than Collision accident, you will pay your Other Than Collision deductible first and then the insurance carrier will pay the remaining damages. Other Than Collision deductibles apply regardless of fault.  For instance, let’s say you have other than collision coverage on your auto policy with a $1,000 deductible.  You hit a deer and the accident results in damage to the front end of your vehicle in the amount of $10,000.  You will be responsible for paying your $1,000 deductible and then the carrier will pay the remaining damages. Carriers often offer multiple deductible options and the amount of your deducible is your choice.  It is important to remember that the lower the deductible, the higher the vehicle insurance premium will be.
